In this interview, Hotboxx delves into his journey, creative process, and upcoming projects, providing an insider’s look into his musical world.
What was the pivotal moment that made you decide to pursue a career in EDM?
Honestly, since I was probably 14 years old, I have been a huge fan of the music and the scene. Growing up in Miami, I had already been listening to George Acosta, Oscar G, Cedric Gervais, Jesse Perez, and many more, and had always had a huge love for the music. When I was 16, I went to my first music festival, which was Ultra Miami, and at that point, I really fell in love with the scene, festivals, the vibe, the music—all of it. I began to get involved first as a promoter, and at 17-18 years old, I began producing and DJing and haven’t looked back. It truly is my passion and I really do love it.
How would you describe your musical style and influences in one word?
Groovy & Diverse
If you weren’t a DJ/Producer, what would you be doing?
Not really sure, probably still involved in the scene in some capacity.
Who are your biggest influences?
Tough question, I have so many. It really depends on the style I am going for or what I am listening to at the moment. Lately, I have really focused on distinguishing my sound and making other producers/DJs have an influence from my unique sound as opposed to copying. But if I had to name a few producers I really like and am particularly into their sound at the moment, I’d say, Dennis Cruz, Pawsa, Kolter, and Ranger Trucco, to name a few.
Do you prefer working alone or collaborating with other artists? Why?
I’m a huge fan of collaboration and feel like collaboration is key in Electronic Music, particularly because it’s really the only scene where every show is literally a collaboration as DJs are playing each other’s music. I also find I learn something or improve my workflow by working with others because I get to see their process and they get to see mine. In turn, we both become better producers.
What’s your favourite book or documentary about music?
I would say I don’t have a particular favourite, but I do really like different programs like «Against the Clock» or «Rhythm Roulette» on YouTube where they put producers in a rushed or uncomfortable situation and force them to make something. It really challenges them, and I enjoy seeing what they create. Also, the «Tiny Desk» series is one of my favourites.
Where is one place you haven’t performed yet but want to?
I mean, I am from Miami, so Club Space, Factory Town, and Jolene’s Room are definitely bucket list venues for me that I would love to have the opportunity to play. I have thankfully been able to play their other venue, Floyd, which was also a bucket list venue for me. These have been my favourite venues growing up and I would love to play there.
What’s an upcoming project you’re excited about?
Honestly, too many to list. I have so much unreleased music that I am really excited about and have been getting great feedback and support on. I can’t wait to share it all with the rest of the electronic community.
What’s the best way for fans to discover your new music?
First, keep up with my social media, especially Spotify and Instagram, as I am most active on there and I am always announcing new releases, shows, etc. there. Also, watch and keep up with my radio show as I constantly play my unreleased tunes as well as give announcements of up-and-coming releases, shows, etc. at the end of every episode.
What’s the most challenging part of producing a track?
Keeping the track unique and groovy while also making sure to maintain my vibe and ensure that when people listen, there is a particular sound that they can identify and link to my production and me as an artist.
Who’s an up-and-coming artist you’re excited about?
Honestly, there are a ton of my friends who are on their way up, gaining popularity, and honestly speaking are amazing producers and DJs. People like Vampire Sex, Chillin Williams, Flynn Nolan, ARHT, Unkwnet, Bonilla, Pezlomd, Lux Velour, Stallings, Subrinse, Alexion, and honestly, there are more. But these guys are all amazing producers and are on the rise!
Favourite snack during late-night studio sessions?
Probably just a good bag of chips or something. I don’t really eat while I am producing.
If you could master one instrument, what would it be?
I mean, the most useful instrument, even though I know how to play but would love to really master, would be the piano/keys, but I also really love the sax.
What’s your favourite emoji to use?
The fire one.
Finally, what are your short-term and long-term goals as an artist?
In the short term, I want to release with big-name labels to establish myself as a true force in production and prepare some amazing sets for my upcoming shows. In the long term, I aim to get on a proper booking agency to really push things further, spread my music, and be able to play some of the venues, festivals, etc., that I have dreamt of playing and know I can play some incredible sets/music at.
