An interview with Cheat Codes and Quarterhead

Esteemed German duo Quarterhead join Cheat Codes for their return to the pitching radar with an explosive collaboration alongside Swedish singer-songwriter KIDDO. Their new track ‘Lucky’ follows directly on Quarterhead’s latest release ‘Eyes On You’, which has already racked up nearly 800,000 Spotify streams, as well as Cheat Codes’ second album HELLRAISERS, Part 2, which features a huge number of well-known acts such as Travis Barker, All Time Low, Bring Me The Horizon, blackbear, Trippie Redd and others. Serving as their first collaborative offering, «Lucky» is now available on all streaming platforms.

We have had the pleasure of talking to Quarterhead and Cheat Codes about their latest release and this has been the result.

Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music? Was it all internet based?

Quarterhead: We met at middle school, started a band, wrote our first own songs and released an album. All analog. The whole electronic influence came later.

Cheat Codes: We all come from different parts of the US and bring different musical backgrounds to Cheat Codes – Trevor is from Portland, Matt is from St Louis and Kevi is from Los Angeles!  We were first introduced to music by collaborating with friends in our hometowns and eventually started meeting other creatives on Myspace and the internet.

Who have been your main inspirations (both musical and in “life”)? And how have they affected your sound?

Quarterhead: Let’s drop some names! Daft Punk, John Mayer, Mac Miller, old school Jazz – we both listen to a lot of different music. I feel there is inspiration for almost any genre within any other.

Cheat Codes: Main inspirations are definitely our family and friends – they’ve all inspired us in different ways but the one common denominator is that they’ve always encouraged us to follow our dreams of becoming musicians.

How would you define your sound?

Quarterhead: Uplifting, danceable, crossover.

Cheat Codes: The Cheat Codes sounds has no boundaries – we’ve collaborated in almost every genre from pop, dance, punk to country!  We love switching up our sound.

How has your sound evolved so far?

Quarterhead: A lot! We really started with a Guitar, Josh’s voice and a piano. Our whole artistry is a journey! We’re really happy about the evolution so far.

Cheat Codes: We find that the collaborators we work with continue to inspire and evolve our sound!  All Time Low and Bring Me The Horizon are good examples of artists we recently worked with who influenced a newly evolved sound.

What can you tell us about your last job? What inspired you? What do you want to convey?

Quarterhead: Our latest single “Lucky” is about the luck that is waiting round the corner. It’s on you to chase it! This is something we learned in the past and a thought we really wanted to share.

Cheat Codes: (MATT) – I used to dress up as Santa Claus and perform at people’s holiday parties to make extra money – it’s humbling to see how far we’ve come.

What can you tell us about each song that makes up your latest work? What is hidden behind?

Cheat Codes: “Lucky” is a special song and our first dance release this year – we love dance music and it’s been great to work with Quarterhead and Kiddo on this song.

How are you living the current situation because of COVID? Has your work affected you a lot? Do you think there is hope? I feel like the underground scene will continue to persist.

Quarterhead: I feel like the underground scene will continue to persist. There is always hope! As long as there is music – there is hope. Music might be one of the most important tools to process all those emotions, highs & lows we went through in the last two years.

Cheat Codes: Covid has us spending a lot more time at home and with our families – we’re hoping to be able to tour and see our fans next year!

What projects are you working on right now?

Quarterhead: New live sets, new singles and new collaborations. Can’t tell too much at this stage – but it’s gonna be really exciting!

Cheat Codes: We have a lot more dance music coming in 2022!
