As a DJ and producer, csk ranks amongst the most enigmatic the electronic world has ever spawned. The fact that much of what he makes, not to mention what he plays, avoids the usual traditions of club music, yet he remains one of the finest players to see in a club, kind of summarises the point. A guy who’d sooner unleash curveballs on a crowd than obvious bangers, unless he’s up for dropping bangers. We caught up with him for a chat about music.
When and how did you get your interest in electronic music?
I started early in the 80s when I was 16. In full italo disco and new wave era. I bought 2 technics but without pitch ,to mix with constant fingers loops. At the end of the 80s I ve been captured by techno ,acid house, and garage. Then Ive changed lot of genres, also uk d&b (end of 90s). And now I’m here ,in the electronic beats again.
How did you decide to dedicate into production?
My first record was in 1991 with MCE (ex Memory) S.Ilario D’Enza – Reggio Emilia ,this label was famous for Koto and other italo disco products, but they were looking for some house and techno producers. The sublabel was action4action and my 2 / 3 vinyls ,Varial and Teletype ,were released together with the super hit Technobert – Neue Dimensionen of my friend Roberto Passera (same label and same year of release) This was our perfect time to start : we were Techno!
What is your criterion when you are producing? What inspire you?
In addition to playing for people, I often like to be part of the audience and take part in other DJ’s shows. this inspires me when I go to the studio: to understand what the public wants because I am part of it, and what I would like, everyone would like!
How do you assess the trajectory you have had and what were the reasons that led you to start it?
I started playing and creating music because of the energy we can share So I am happy for the hard journey I have made, sharing all my spiritual energy, all the sacrifices and many things that people can not understand if they are not inside. I never do it for money or to make this my first job. I have done many other jobs and music production is just my way of communicating with people, because I think that in this life you must not only speak but also listen, it is through a mutual exchange that we can form a great energy.
What was your criterion when producing your last EP?
In my latest ep I tried to put a melodical refrain in 2 very different tracks, so that you can whistle these melodies. And the groove will make you dance! But also I wanted to involve other good producers to share immediately this energy with their remixes and give more strenght to the project
Could you recommend a set that you are especially proud of it, and that we can see on your Soundcloud or on YouTube?
I don’t have recent live on YT cause I took a big break after the 90s. And at that time we didn’t use smartphones or internet or boiler rooms 🙂 now I can do new gigs because Ive found other new reasons for playing outside. You can find some music in this pod for Something Special and a new one will be soon for Dogs & Vultures:
But you can read something in this article published by BeatToBe by Roberto Passera.
What can you tell us about the scene of your city? What would you improve?
In my town there are not many clubs for the electronic sound. In the 90s this a was a good place, not distant from riviera clubs , Riccione for example and Milano, Bologna or Versilia.. areas full of clubs. Now we have a few small clubs for 200 dancers. But owners are not djs so they make a little bit of confusion in booking guests. Ideal could be to become residents again (as in the 90s) and the resident can have full title to book by himself the other djs for the club.
Finally, what can you tell us about your present and future projects?
2018 was a very good year for csk beat and dogmatraxxx, my labels. For 2019 I’d like to continue with the help of my friend David aka K-Effect Mastering (amazing mastering studio), and more collaborations for me and Dog.ma (me and Paolo Soncini) Now I am out with this new ep on Emerald & Doreen with hot remixes by Attendances, Man2.0 and Tiempo de Maldad. Soon coming 2 or 3 tracks in a big V.A. by Dogs & Vultures. Then another Ep for Maleante Records and another one for Contolla (including big remixes) Another Dog.ma track will be released by Ombra International (vinyl) owned by the great Curses.
