Goran: “Electronic music is my life philosophy”

0
Goran creates music that works in all settings and transcends genres. German based Dj and producer Goeran Meyer first discovered his love for electronic music and the underground scene after visiting the legendary Love Parade festival in Berlin which soon saw him running his own succesful clubnights and events in his native Mageburg and the surrounding areas, sharing the booth with the likes of Bill Youngman, Markus Welby, Cannibal Cooking Club and Hanno Hinkelbein amongst others at leading venue’s such as the infamous Tresor and 1040 Leipzig.  We had a chance to talk to him, so enjoy your reading and check out his latest releases. Read our interview below to find out more about Smit’s wide-spanning influences, creative environment and studio methods.

1 – When and how did you get your interest in electronic music?

In my early teens I started listening to various musical genres from hip hop to reggae to techno and to house. I really learned to love electronic music by visiting the Loveparade in Berlin. I was inspired by the music and the culture – and still be. After visiting many festivals and parties, I organized mind-blowing events with friends in our home town.

2 – How did you decide to dedicate into production?

The idea of producing my own music was grown step by step over the last 20 years. In the beginning it was just collecting and playing vinyls with friends. Inspired by the sounds of our idols I started doing my own music production trials with my Korg Electribes and an old version of Ableton Live. By experimenting with music, I got to know creative processes and gained experiences that help me in my home studio or by playing live today. My set up has consumed a lot of time and nerves and learned me many lessons.

3 – How do you assess the trajectory you have had and what were the reasons that led you to start it?

Electronic music is my life philosophy. It is by my side since I am a child – in my every day live, by doing sports and travelling and in my car. It was a natural step for me to and produce and appreciate electronic music. I love it and it gives me many great feelings and the opportunity to get to know many awesome people to work with. Looking back to 2016 when I started my little independent label MYR and the upcoming 20th release I am proud that I took this step. I am grateful for many projects, great collaborations and wonderful friendships.

4- What was your criterion when producing your last EP?

The key is that a release feels perfectly complete and matches the label and its philosophy. We don’t care about the pressure of time. We wait until a project feels right and ready to be released. The main focus on our new release “Precious” was to create a percussive rolling sound and deep grooves that still have lightness and a certain melancholy. Juli Lee and Nesker round out the EP with their unique remixes. We are proud to present “Precious” on all major stores on the 11/09/2020.

5 – Could you recommend a set that you are especially proud of, and that we can see on your Soundcloud or on YouTube?

On my Soundcloud account you will find all of our MYR releases and every month a new 60- minute DJ set consisting of promo sounds from the previous month.

6 – What can you tell us about the scene of your city? What would you improve?

I am living in a small town on the countryside. Bars and clubs that play electronic music are rare. There are just a few nice events to take place during the year. A huge impact on the events are having official requirements and the fact that the taste for good music changed in the last 20 years. It becomes more and more difficult and expensive to book highly requested DJs for smaller events, because many people follow the mainstream that is hyped by the social media. Currently, everything is mixed up by the coronavirus. Nobody knows that the future will bring to the electronic party culture.

7 – Finally, what can you tell us about your present and future projects?

It is a weird situation now and our life is strongly affected by the coronavirus and the accompanying regulations. We focus on releasing great music of our artists. Kaiser Waldon is working on a new album planned for the end of this or the beginning of next year and Juli Lee enjoys playing on events after the corona lockdown in Switzerland. Music is our passion even in times of crises. Precious EP by Goeran Meyer will be available on all major digital stores on the 11.09.2020 (excl. Beatport 28.08.2020).
