Interview with Pixel82

0

Como Las Grecas has the pleasure of interviewing Pixel82 ahead of their LP release “infinity”. Dropping on Blossom Kollektiv this June. A brilliant collection of Melodic House, Bicep like grooves and a unique twist.

Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music?

Hi! Thanks for reaching out.

I’m from Porto, Portugal. I’ve also lived about 5 years in London, something which had a big influence on me and my sound, but I’m happily back in my hometown.

I got into music when I was about 13, with a friend in school who got me into guitar playing. Heavy metal and punk rock/industrial bands followed and when I realized I could record and play all the instruments and create everything I had on my mind, soon I was producing alone and getting more and more into electronic music. Quickly I wanted to play music out again, and hence DJing and full on electronic music production started. FFW to today 🙂

Who have been your main inspirations (both musical and in “life”)? And how have they affected your sound?

I am inspired by all music I hear to be honest. From techno, to heavy metal and pop.

I really feel Infinity is the culmination of years of holding music in, that finally came through when I did not feel the pressure to make music for the dance-floor. I am very inspired by nature and simultaneously by technology, and in some way I believe this is present in this album, as some tracks have quite some high tech musical production techniques, as others have lots of background organic sounds.

How would you define your sound?

Like a mixture of various genres. Between leftfield electronica, melodic house & techno with some trancy and indie bits I guess.

How has your sound evolved so far? Do you see yourself as part of one style of music?

I think my sound used to be more raw, but I’ve always loved melodies at heart and this is very present in Infinity. Hard to pinpoint me in one genre only.

What can you tell us about your last release? What inspired you? What do you want to convey?

The concept for Infinity is the continuum of life, of a constant loop that evolves over time. It is a discovery of myself musically, a rediscovery of the past to find the future. I wanted to create a record that is introspective and uplifting, organic and digital, without the pressure from pleasing the dance-floor, but with it in mind and heart at all times.

Closed in the studio in the pandemic, I found myself experimenting freely with all kinds of sounds and musical ideas. This introspection and rediscovery, together with new experiences from being a first time dad, expressed themselves in Infinity, which I feel represents me quite well at the moment.

What modern artists are you enjoying? Maybe you can share some lesser known artists we might not know of?

Kessler, Fasme, Earth Trax, t e s t p r e s s, Steve Rachmad, Logic 1000… Too many to mention really, but lately I’ve been loving everything that comes out from these artists.

What projects are you working on right now?

I’m finishing my first A/V live act to present my album with synths and responsive visuals. I am also starting the initial ideas for a new, more organic and experimental music project under my name Filipe Galante. I also am turning my studio Porto Beats into a production and teaching platform hub for other artists. All this while I keep on DJing and producing as Pixel82.
