We have the pleasure of welcoming My Secret Playground to the site, just ahead of their August release on Rabotat Records. Lets see what’s news and what’s going on in their world.
Hey. what a year we have had, how are you feeling?
Hey 🙂 I would lie if I say everything is brilliant. This year was like a rollercoaster for me, with lots of highs and lows. In the beginning of the pandemic, I enjoyed having time for composing and didn’t have to do my daily routine of booking gigs and having to write emails every night. After a while, everything in life was too simple, so I started getting into sports so as not to become crazy 😉 Nowadays, when clubs started to open again slowly, I was stressed out about going back to work. Many of my colleagues are sharing that same stress, but I guess after a while everything will get back to normal.
How did you get started in the music bviz? How did your interest in music creation begin?
I started playing drums when I was 15, playing Nirvana, Tool and Pearl Jam. Around 25, I found out that I wanted to create my own music without any boundaries. I also wanted to be independent. from others since my friends in Austria didn’t want to go to the next professional level. So I started with electronic music and created My Secret Playground. After I moved to Berlin in 2010, things became more serious and I decided to quit my 9-to-5 job to focus on music.
How did “When The Lights Go Down” come about?
It was the first track I composed at the beginning of the lockdown last year. So the title is kind of obvious 😉 The feeling of sitting at home and waiting for better times. Jared Hines did some great vocal recordings over it, just using some of my explanation and the title of the song to craft the words.
How much has your sound changed since you started until now?
Oh, a lot. Since electronic music was kind of new to me when I started, it took a long time to say: “That´s me!” My first big influence was Parov Stelar. When I saw him performing dance music with live instruments, it changed my whole perspective. So from a kind of Massive Attack sound, I changed into Electro Swing, then Techno and into today’s Indie Dance sound. Indie Dance with a lot of 80’s influence – paired with modern drum sounds – is what I really love the most.. and maybe it’s the end of my musical genre journey, let’s see. 😉 I am a real child of the 80’s deep down.
How does your creative process work? How to you start a track in the studio?
I always start with drum grooves, then playing around with bass or synth sounds and jamming on the keyboard until I find a direction I like. Sometimes it takes hours, sometimes just minutes. At the end of the process, I sometimes can’t even remember how I did it. Things seem to come from above 😉
What is behind the title “When The Lights Go Down”? What is the message behind the record?
It should describe the feelings of artists during the lockdown last year. I also wanted to make it a bit timeless with the synth parts, giving the listeners the feeling that even if the lockdown ends, we still all have to struggle with a lot of other problems.
How do you see your own sound? How would you describe it to other?
Indie Dance – 80’s, Rock and Jazz influences paired with modern techno sounds.
Besides your next release, do you have something looming on the horizon?
Always 😉 I have new tracks in the pipeline with Rabotat Records from our time performing in India and other tracks planned for 2022. I’m playing with my Band at Mauerpark in Berlin every Sunday. That’s good for my soul and has helped in getting back on track.
Any final words for your fans?
Stay healthy and get wild <3
