«Refolded: Waving At Airplanes Remixes» is the sixth full-length album from composer and electronic producer Will Thoma’s collaborative project Dive Index, offering a darker, more atmospheric sound.
Available now on Neutral Music with remixes from Mercury award-winning producer Mike Lindsay and Plumbline, and new versions of the originals, this is a brilliant, exhilarating and addictive LP to listen to. This «Refolded: Waving At Airplanes Remixes» features a collection of reinterpretations and remixes of songs from the Dive Index album – ‘Waving At Airplanes’. With remixes from artists like Mike Lindsay / Tunng and Plumbline. And with the voices of Natalie Walker and Merz. Each of them brings unique perspectives to explore the edges of techno. The result is a sonic journey that is diffused in very different compositions from the minds of individual artists.
The deep and forceful cinematographic sounds make us go beyond the limits of musical and metaphysical genres, taking us to a unique place.
We have had the pleasure of speaking with the architects of this wonderful work, and this has been the result.
How was the remix album born?
We released the original Dive Index album, Waving At Airplanes last year in the beginning of the pandemic and since live shows, traveling and in-person collaborations weren’t an option for the rest of the year, I thought it would be interesting to reinterpret some of the songs and put together a remix album.
What can you tell us about each of the artists who participate in it?
Mike Lindsay is the only other ‘remixer’ on this album. He’s a wonderful producer and I love the work he’s done with Tunng and more recently LUMP. He chose to do rework the song, ‘She’s Exploding’ and I love what he came up with. Really wild rhythms and super cool sounds. Beyond that track, I actually did the rest of the remixes myself. I wanted to have the new versions be a bit more beat focused than the originals so I thought I would channel a few different styles from darker downtempo grooves, to some brooding hip-hop and chilled out minimal house.
Where is your sound heading?
Well, Waving At Airplanes was deliberately produced within the confines of a select group of instruments including modular synthesizer, piano and some acoustic guitar. Even all the drums were created with the modular. It was a challenging experiment and super fun but with the remixes, I made a conscious effort to work with everything except those instruments to create a different sound. As far as the future, I have feeling I’ll go a bit more acoustic, using live drums, guitar and cello.
What can you tell us about the video clip?
We created videos for two of the remixes – one for ‘She’s Exploding’ where I contributed some ‘movements’ which we shot in time-lapse mode to compliment the frenetic percussion in Mike Lindsay’s remix. And the second video, we gathered a bunch of spring blooms around the studio in Ojai, California. We shot them at night under a spotlight and put them in a power drill to get them spinning. There’s an anthropomorphic quality that I liked about the way the plants started to dance and the motion worked really well for the remix of ‘Wish I Had A Pulse’.
Do you feel identified in your sound with an artist from this compilation of remixes?
Sorry, not really relevant since I did most of the remixes myself.
What more projects are you working on?
At the moment, I’m working on demos for some new Dive Index songs as well as a collaboration with the cellist, Helen Money, which is quite a departure from the Dive Index world. It’s all instrumental and much more cinematic. Hopefully we’ll get that completed in the next couple months and it will be released early next year.
