Can you describe your musical style and influences using just one phrase?
Melodic.
Is there a morning routine you follow that helps you get ready for the day?
It’s all about the coffee in the morning, man. The first thing I do is brew a pot and pour myself a strong, piping-hot cup o’ joe.
When you’re crafting a new track, what’s typically playing in the background for inspiration?
I can’t listen to anything else when I’m writing. Is that something people do?? If you’re talking about having the TV on, I’d say something mundane in the background like Sportscenter.
Which international music festivals do you regularly attend for networking and inspiration?
I’ve just begun to get out there on the festival circuit. That’s something that I’ve taken more of an interest in since learning how to produce Electronic Music in particular. There is a great festival here in NYC called «We Belong Here.» They host events at Pier 17 and Governors Island. There’s also Club Rudy’s and The Montauk Beach House that bring music lovers from all over the world.
How would you describe your personal style both in your music and in your life?
Good question. I would describe my personal style as being very laid back. I’m from New York City, but I tend to blend in really well on the west coast where the vibe is always super chill. I keep it pretty relaxed.
Can you tell us about the moment when you realized you wanted to pursue a career in Electronic Music?
Yes, it was after attending a music production course at the Juilliard School Evening Division. I mean, how can you not be ready to take on the world after having just had a window into one of the greatest musical institutions in the world? That gave me all the tools I needed to begin planning my career in Electronic Music.
Looking back on your childhood, what kind of kid were you, and how do you see those attributes reflected in your work today?
As a kid, I was painfully average in almost every way except for my musical ability. I wasn’t a natural athlete or performer, but my parents noticed my singing voice and my affinity for the piano at a very early age. That foundation in music, as well as the education I received, are reflected in my work today.
Who are your favorite music producers and what about their work and projects resonates with you?
Chromeo is an inspiration. I love everything those guys do. Ben Böhmer is an incredible talent. Kid Francescoli. All of these guys create amazing music, put on a great live show, and make everything look so easy!!!
What are some essential plugins or instruments in your studio?
As a former choir boy, I love implementing vocal plug-ins and creating vocal arrangements with VSTs. Exhale by Output is the perfect tool for that. Arturia is also a go-to brand for me as well. The Analog Lab series has such a rich variety of sounds that really cater to the electronic genre.
If you could remake any song from the past decade, what would it be and why?
«Silence» by Khalid and Marshmello. That song is just hypnotic. It’s in a great vocal range for me as well, so I’d love to take a swing at that one.
Who or what inspires you the most in your creative endeavors?
I’m driven most by the idea of creating a career out of music. It’s really the only thing I’ve ever pursued over the course of my entire life. It feels like everything I’ve ever done has been preparing me for the music life.
Are there any specific challenges or obstacles that motivate you to push yourself further in your career?
There are too many to list, honestly. That’s a huge part of the process that you have to learn to deal with and overcome. Challenges and obstacles will always be there, and they come at you fast. If you can’t find a way to keep progressing in the face of those challenges, you will never grow or achieve what you want.
Everyone has a guilty pleasure—what’s yours when it comes to tracks or artists?
I think most producers would agree that a solid 808 or sick drum loop is the best guilty pleasure out there when it comes to making something catchy right out of the chute.
If you could invite any three musicians, living or deceased, to a jam session, who would they be and why?
John Mayer, Phil Collins, and Moby. Can you even imagine!?!?
Lastly, what’s your favorite DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) and what memories does it evoke for you?
I’m Logic Pro for life!! It takes me right back to the Juilliard days.
