0

Next Saturday December 1, Lindstrøm (Hans-Peter Lindstrøm, born 16 February 1973) is presented in Razzmatazz Clubs (Barcelona) with his Live set, one of the most interesting artists of the current scene, and this year has released two albums, one with vocals and one instrumental, demonstrating the quality and creativity of the Norwegian multi-instrumentalist, producer and DJ, lover of new technologies, home life, family and kitchen …. With him were talking recently to make this interesting interview for the blog.

Interview:

– As you see your evolution, since those beginnings with The Silver Voices or Slow & Local, and then on its own, it has been almost 10 years, how has it changed Lindstrom and his music?

I just try to enjoy what I making music and my music has been changing over the years naturally i guess, more personal definitely.
I’m just curious, I just want to try different stuff to discover new ways of make music and to work with different people.
It just happens.

– You are very familiar and homely, with two children, and you love to cook, How is family life with music artist? Do you have time for everything?

It’s about getting in the right balance, I’m working in my studio on the evenings from 9 to 4
So usually is not a problem, I spend time with my kids and my wife, but recently I’ve been travelling a lot, the next month I’m going to travel every weekend so.. that’s not good because, when my wife and kids want to spend like a weekend I won’t be there, but usually the balance gets good. I’m trying to spend more time at home and less time on the road.
It’s just part of the business I guess, I’m not complaining, I’m really happy with my situation,
I’m able to live making music so..
It’s not like an office but kind of, I’m not doing paper work, I’m creating and fooling around so I feel really free, and I’m able to do whatever I want but of course, there’s obligations and I have to meet people, do lot of stuff and email, being with you now guys it’s a pleasure but I could be doing music right now you know XD

– Why do you believe in the right amount of musicians and musical quality Nordic?

Most of the people are doing great stuff, and I think it’s a good city to live and for music I think

– In 2012 you released 2 albums (Six Cups Of Rebel, with vocals, and now the Smalhands, instrumental), 2 discs full of creativity, and the best of the year, what are the differences of each album?

On Six Cup to rebel I was just like going crazy and breaking all the rules and doing something different, but on Small Hands is more kind of going back to the roots and instrumental dj music
as I did ten years ago or even longer. I was curious if releasing two albums a year was good idea or not, I’m pretty happy with doing it like that, I think people are consuming music so fast, so most people can handle it, so If some people don’t like the first album they will on the second one and viceversa. For me was a fun thing to do so I just want to release a lot of music.

– You’re a producer when recording his own albums, you take care of the production, playing all the instruments, and doing almost everything yourself, and once you’ve worked with collaborating with many other producers (Todd Terje, Prins Thomas, Christabelle , Rune Lindbaek …..), yet have too many remixes, always with a very personal and different from the rest. Where are you most comfortable (your recordings, collaborations, remixes)? How do you focus each job?

I like working alone, but after working alone I like to work with people. I feel more free working alone. When we work with Prins Thomas I usually work alone but we are working on the same track so I work some and give it to him and he works some and give it back to me so we been finishing the album like back and forth. With Christabelle we been recording a lot of voices in my studio and then I worked alone after she left. But I love both way to work.
Sometimes It’s getting much better if you work without the people and feel free to play some instruments and be able to create alone, But sometimes its important to step out and join.

– What instrumentation and process you used for recording ‘Smalhans’?

I was working with only Logic sounds. Because I wanted to try to make an album just out of presets. I believe that music is in your head, not in the instruments, sometimes you don’t need expensive equipment, you just need good ideas. I felt that I needed to get away for a while from vintage and standard synthesizers and try something with just ideas.

– It’s funny name of tracks, what have meaning and relationship with music in them?

It’s more like a silly thing I’ve done. One day I was making food and I noted that it’s quite similr to make music. Picking the right ingredients and mixing everythign together, put it in the oven and see what’s happens. And then see reactions, their like “yes, great tune!” or “this food is great!” (laughs)

– What have been your main influences that artists / producers stand out most to you?

80’s pop music, synth music, everything from Wham to Cindy Lauper. I’ve started to listen
to music when I was…. Michael Jackson, Thriller, Of the Wall, Also Prince, I never get tired of listen to prince. Listening to music on the radio, that was like my school. I like heavy metal, crowd rock, electronic music, everything. I don’t really have any special gurus on music you know?

– A person like you, you produce, and play all the instruments, how do you see the evolution of technology in recent years?

I’m always looking for new ways on producing music. What I like using a computer is the flexibility of, you don’t need to recall, you don’t work like in a mixing desk, maybe in the 70’s you had to finish a track and the start a new one, but now it’s like open ableton live and compose both for a record and a live setup. I like when it’s easy, and it’s creative, intuitive.
I don’t like programming, it’s more like if where building a house and you need a hammer, it’s intuitive. doesn’t really matter which kind of hammer you’re using, the most important thing it’s what’s in your head.

– Next December 1 you are presenting ‘Smalhans’ live in Razzmatazz (Barcelona), what we will find in this live?

I don’t know maybe if they were listening to the album, and they recongize some of the tracks would be great. Lot of people are listening to Minimal or Dubstep,my music is very melodic, a lot of chord changes and arpeggios, and for some people maybe it’s difficult to listen. I’m really looking forward to play, I think it’s going to be a fun night.

– And what instrumentation you use in live?

I’m using a laptop with ableton live and an sync with an ipad for controlling midi and fx, and for triggering and stuff like that. And a small keyboard. It’s very simple my set up is very simple, everything fits into a backpack 🙂
