An interview with Alex Lur

Today on Como Las Grecas we have a quick chat with Alex Lur ahead of his Let Love Shine release.

Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music?

I’m Canadian! I got into DJing when I was 13 and started producing shortly at 15.
My Dad was an avid fan of dance music, so he got me into it.
We couldn’t afford instruments or music courses at the time, so I torrented Fruity Loops and taught myself how to produce music.

Who have been your main inspirations (both musical and in «life»)? And how have they affected your sound?

I grew up listening to trance and old school rave, but I wouldn’t say that there was a particular musical genre that really crafted my musical identity. I even had a dubstep phase at a certain point.
Deadmau5 was a huge inspiration for me growing up. I still draw a lot of inspiration from his old sound today.

How would you define your sound?

UUnpredictable. The beautiful thing about electronic music is that it allows me to constantly explore and try new things that I haven’t done before.
If I feel like I’ve already done something before, then I’ll automatically drop the idea.
That’s just how my mind works. I get bored pretty easily and like challenging myself.

How has your sound evolved so far?

Too soon to say! I only have a few releases out, but I’m looking to explore beyond melodic techno and try producing South African music.

What can you tell us about your last release? What inspired you? What do you want to convey?

My work isn’t that introspective, so I don’t always know what it is that I’m trying to convey. Let Love Shine was written in collaboration with my good friends Dish Dash from Saudi Arabia. They had a strong groovy idea and I added some melodies over it to capture a feeling of nostalgia.

What modern artists are you enjoying?

I listen to a lot of really random stuff that has nothing to do with electronic music.
I really like this guy called Jean Dawson and this other talented dude from South Africa named Vigro Deep.

How are you living the current situation because of COVID? Has your work affected you a lot?

I’m still in the very early stages of my career, so I can’t say that COVID has impacted me that much. I was writing music before this all happened and will continue doing so.
In fact, I think the pandemic has allowed smaller artists to catch up with the bigger guys.
Nonetheless, lockdowns, at least in Canada, have granted artists the opportunity to build a local community around them. In my city, you’re seeing a dozen underground raves pop up with new blood each month because of strict lockdown regulations.

What projects are you working on right now?

I’m working on an exciting project centred around African music right now, but I can’t speak too much about it!
