We interviewed producer Bastian Bengamin, who offers us a hypnotic track participating in the latest release of the Be Your Own Studio label. Stay tuned!

¿When and How did you get interested for electronic music?

It was from a young age that I was interested in creating things. I first started off by creating compositions on the piano. Not long after that, I wanted to expand my sound and that’s when I started making electronic music. I was around the age of 11 when my dad introduced me to Logic Pro X.

How did COVID situation affected in your work?

I think the hardest part of COVID for me is that I don’t go out of my comfort zone as much as before. This results in having less development in my sound. The good thing about COVID is that I had the time to dive really deep into creating music with more details and layers. I also had the time to write stronger and more complete concepts.

Has “Weightless” been inspired in a situation because of the lockdown?

Weightless is about losing your grip on reality and slowly ascending from the world where we live in. Funny enough this story wasn’t related to the lockdown on purpose. But I’m 100% certain that I got influenced unconsciously.

What is your production criteria? What inspired you?

I’m always searching for strange sounds that in itself has no musical meaning. I like the imperfections in nature. Like when you drop stones on the floor or crack a piece of wood. These kind of strange sounds give me a lot of memories which then result in emotions. I record these sounds and play around with them until I feel some sort of emotion coming up. Then I will grab a synthesizer to write the real chords and melodies.

How would you define your sound? And how much has it changed since you started producing?

I think my sound is quite dark and cinematic. My sound also has become a lot more experimental and layered since I started making music.

How would you validate your trajectory and which has been the reasons that took you to begin?

I started making music because I always have the urge to create something and express myself. Music was the easiest thing to express myself with. It took me a long time to be at the level where I am right now. I think that I always had a distinctive sound. The hardest part was to be proud of it and stay true to it.

What was your criteria at the time you composed this track?

For me it was important that the track was telling a story and could translate the feeling of having no sense of gravity. I tried the track in a lot of different BPM’s. I found out that a quite slow BPM translated this feeling the best.

What can you tell us about the music panorama in your city? What would you improve?

I live in a city with 90.000 people in the eastern part of The Netherlands and although the city is small, the music scene is very big. We have a lot of DJ’s and musicians in our city. We even have our own collective where we hang out with each other to teach and learn new things.

Lastly, What can you tell us about your present and future projects?

I just released my first full length album and I’m almost receiving it on vinyl. I also just finished a theatre project together with some amazing people. Currently, I’m working on my live show and some new music. In 2021, I want to make some more videoclips, a live show, a movie for my album and an EP.
