Beth Lydi has an honest and sincere career. Her musical selection and good judgment has dared borders. The productions and dj sets are powerful statement, emblematic of her no-holds-barred approach. We take the opportunity to interview her.
I think my very first meeting with electronic music was with Gabba when I was 15. It was such an energetic and wild sound, I loved it. But the time that really changed my was my exchange year in Berlin 10 years ago. Coming from a city with such a limited party-scene as Oslo, it was just mind-blowing to experience the never-ending parties and how it was not just about getting wasted but actually a whole lifestyle. It opened my eyes and changed me forever.
What have you been doing with your time in lockdown in your city or country?
I have spent a lot of time in the studio making music and developing my skills. There was not much else to do in Berlin. I invested in some new synthesizers and used a lot of time to get to know them.
What was your aim when producing your latest EPs on SNOE and Dirtybird ?
My SNOE EP was a dedication to a big change in my life right now. I took on a job that gave me the opportunity to life part time in northern Norway, which is a beautiful place to be. Rough nature, never ending days (due to the midnight sun) and very friendly people. The connection felt like a natural fit as SNOE is a label born in the snowy mountains. The Dirtybird release was a collab I did together with my boyfriend Andreas Henneberg. We just decided to do some tracks together as well as we have so much time on our hands. As soon as we finished it we felt we had something special so we were very happy to sign it to such a big label as Dirtybird.

It must be my most recent and actually first DJ set since last year from Ritter Butzke. I was so excited and a little nervous for my first show in such a long time! The first few mixes felt so weird but then something happened and I just felt like I was melting together with the moment. It was amazing and I couldn’t stop.

In Oslo I think it is still quite the boys club. It has gotten better over the years, but there is still a bit to go. I think diversity is very important for everyone to feel comfortable in a club and also it is essential because people with different backgrounds and experiences bring different inputs and leads to development and new sounds and ideas. In Berlin the scene is pretty great, I’m very curious how it will be after this whole corona thing.
There is a lot going on at the moment. I am excited to say that I have some personal new milestones happening. My EP “One Girls Orchestra” that came out on Kevin Knapp and Hutchtastic’s label Plump Records was very special to me. Not only are they close friends but also artists I appreciate and respect a lot, so it was a great honour to be their first external artist releasing. The tracks I have made during COVID all have a very personal note to them. “One Girl Orchestra” is a result of me wanting to do something different and including an instrument I learned to play as a kid. “Pull Through” I made to remind myself and others that we will, in the end, come out stronger than before. Even though things can seem difficult at times. The Ep comes with a sick remix from a long time hero of mine, Nathan Barato. That was pretty sick. There are also a few more EPs in the pipeline, so keep your eyes and ears open 😉
