Dipolair creates music that works in all settings and transcends genres. His openness to a wide range of sound is what has both made him a widely loved favourite, but also someone who operates in his own parallel musical world. Can you tell us a bit about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music? Was it all internet based?
I am French but since 2010 I travel the world with my family. I lived in the Indian ocean, in Asia, in North Africa and now I live in Brazil, in Sao Paulo. I started studying classical music with piano when I was a child. Then I opened up to other styles like rock, grunge, metal to finally arrive at electronic music. I had several musical projects in the different countries where I lived, which allowed me to integrate local sounds into my musical universe. I’ve always preferred live music even though I do DJ sets. When I’m on stage with my machines, I can add a new dimension to my productions and thrill the audience in a different way.
Who have been your main inspirations (both musically and in «life»)? And how have they affected your sound?
My meetings with musicians from all over the world and different cultures have enriched me a lot and it continues to be so because I like to discover sounds and instruments every day to incorporate them into my music. My music is often influenced by the sounds I hear every day. I do research on the internet, I go to concerts, I travel, it inspires me a lot.
How would you define your sound?
I’m not focused on a specific style in particular even if my music is more oriented towards Progressive House and Melodic House. Depending on the encounters, the inspirations and the moments when I compose, I like to explore other sound worlds. The basis remains electronic music, with a powerful sound to make people dance. But I like, at the same time, to make them travel in different sound universes with the addition of ethnic influences.
How has your sound evolved so far?
My music is constantly evolving. My style has changed a lot over time. I went through many stages in my life and each of them added a stone to the building. I like experimenting with new sounds, new types of synths, adding traditional acoustic instruments, working with singers and musicians who have never done electronic music before. It’s a new challenge every time to create a track that makes you dance and is inspiring at the same time.
What can you tell us about your last job? What inspired you? What do you want to convey?
I recently met a young Brazilian producer called ANGELLO(BR). He wanted to collaborate with me, which I accepted with pleasure because I like to mix musical universes. Together we created a Melodic Techno track called «Do You Remember». It was a challenge to work on this title because I produce little techno music with such a high bpm but it was a very interesting experience. The result is great and the feedback is super good.
What can you tell us about each song that makes up your latest work? What is hidden behind?
For «Do You Remember», the sound of Melodic Techno in the style of the Afterlife label which animated the production. As it’s a collaboration, everyone comes with different influences and it’s the combination of all that that gives the particular character to this track.
How are you living the current situation due to COVID? Has your work affected you a lot? Do you think there is hope? I feel like the underground scene will continue to persist.
Like all musicians who perform live, the pandemic was a complicated time, especially at the beginning. But it allowed me to focus on production, to increase the quality of my tracks, to try new things and new processes. I think that I come out of it grown with new energy and desires.
What projects are you working on right now?
Some time ago I received a message from Ettore Castagna, an Italian musician who plays traditional instruments from southern Italy. He told me that he liked my musical universe and wanted to incorporate his instruments into my music. We started chatting, he recorded his instruments and I started composing a track with it. I’m super proud of the result. The combination of the sounds of the double flute and the Calabrian Lira with the beats and the synths is perfect. You’ll be able to listen to «Ionica» soon when it comes out in a few weeks.
