An interview with Sturjun

The Australian singer and producer Sturjun presents ‘Just A Friend’, which is a whole letter of introduction to the sound that he will develop in the next releases. With this work, the producer reveals to us his intimacy in the language that music allows him, but without losing his intention. His openness to a wide range of sounds is what has made him a beloved favorite, but also someone who operates in his own parallel musical world. We had a chance to talk to him, so enjoy your reading and check out his latest releases.
Hey Sturjun, thank you for answering our questions. I’d like to start by asking you about your technical approach to creating music. What gear do you normally use?

I don’t really use too much outboard gear, I’m just working with an Apollo Twin and do all of my production and sound design with Logic Pro.

What aspects does the equipment you use that you like bring to your production?

The Apollo Twin is super handy because it has a bunch of awesome plug-ins and analog emulations that help give productions and mixes that retro sound.
What can you tell us about the latest single: «Just A Friend»? How was it born? What can you tell us about the single?

Just a Friend came together after just doodling around with some chords and melodies on an acoustic guitar. After that I built the main beat and sketched out the lyrics. It took ages to get the synth parts sounding right, I had left it alone for about 2 years before finally getting the vocals recording and finishing the track.
Your single «Just A Friend» is having a very good impact. What were you inspired by to create it? How do you turn your inspiration into a produced track?

I don’t remember anything particularly interesting happening in my life at the time but I guess I was inspired by things that happened in my life. I always basically translate what I came up with on guitar into a synth and that’s usually how the production starts.

How has your sound evolved since you started?

I think I don’t use anywhere near as many ‘real’ instruments and am a lot more focused on synths and drum programming. I think I’ve steered away from Live sounding recordings to much more electronic sounds.

What is Sturjun’s sound?

I guess this song is modern electronic pop with a hint of 80’s retro synth pop.

What other projects are you working on right now?
I’m working on a few new singles that will hopefully be out soon!

What makes you happy?

Working on my musicalthough it can be very frustrating it brings a lot of satisfaction as well.

Do you have any final words of wisdom?

Not really, but make time for the things you like doing!
