Chooses You’ and ‘All That You Dream’: featuring Lady Nade, which won plaudits on BBC Bristol’s Upload Track of the Week, Trans Radio UK, Medway Pride Radio and BuzzMusic.
‘On To Bigger Things’ is a collection of four songs that explore vulnerability, growth, acceptance and self-love. The first single ‘A Girl With Love To Share’ – Feat. Svenja Behle will be released on February 18 followed by a video premiere (March 2).
We have had the pleasure of speaking with the artist and this has been the result.
Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music? Was it all internet based?
I’m from Bristol in the UK. I got into music at a very early age before we even had the internet! I grew up with a wide range of influences from my dad. I got my first guitar at age 5, and had a go at the cello, trombone and singing in bands as a teenager. I got into recording when I was about 15 and made a few albums for my bands, and my own solo projects. Even though I recorded a lot, I never released anything early on as I felt I was always on a learning curve.
Who have been your main inspirations (both musical and in «life»)? And how have they affected your sound?In life, I’m inspired by people who step up and stand for what they believe in, despite the odds.In music, I’m inspired by artists who have the freedom to express themselves.I was brought up on Kate Bush, The Who, Benjamin Britten, Pink Floyd, War of The Worlds by Jeff Wayne.
How would you define your sound?I call it Experimental Pop. I experiment a lot vocally, musically and with song structures in order to break away from typical conventions. I want every release to be quite different. Some will be more of a pop sound, some more electronic, others more experimental. For that reason, I identify as being Genrefluid.How has your sound evolved so far?In the last 3 years I’ve really been exploring authenticity.I wanted to let go of my perfectionism, which is a killer for creativity when it comes to art. I’ve been really finding my own raw and authentic voice, without all the polishing that we are accustomed to these days in music.For that reason, I prefer to record or sample live instruments, like piano, harp and strings. And, not use autotune!What can you tell us about your last job? What inspired you? What do you want to convey?My last release was called ‘A Girl With Love To Share’. Featuring Svenja Behle from Berlin.It is a song about self love. A story of making a stand for oneself, facing the inner critic of shame and self sabotage, making positive change, and accepting who you are.It was inspired by listening to Antony and the Johnsons and co-writing with one of my songwriters, Sue Harris. I wanted to create a big cinematic sound with live orchestral instruments.
What can you tell us about each song that makes up your latest work? What is hidden behind?My EP is called ‘On To Bigger Things’, the title (and cover artwork) comes from a piece of conceptual art I made that says – No matter which path you choose in life, you are always growing, through learning curves, on to the better version of yourself. You just don’t know what that is yet!In order, each song is about Vulnerability, Growth, Acceptance and Self-Love.Behind the story is my own message, saying ‘Be Yourself’ – Motivated by my own need to come out as Non-Binary. How are you living the current situation because of COVID? Has your work affected you a lot? Do you think there is hope? I feel like the underground scene will continue to persist.Yes. I always think there is hope. Covid affected my work a lot. However, it prompted a real move to be more visible online. Also, learning about live-streams, interacting with other like-minded people, further afield and turning to live-production methods that doesn’t need a band to perform. So, there are always new ways to create music and we adapt to the circumstances.What projects are you working on right now?I’m working on the next EP and one other collaboration with a local artist.These releases will cross cultures and more genres.I’ve also created a lot of new material since lockdown with my new solo live-loop set up.SOCIAL MEDIA:
