Como Las Grecas interviews DJ ASSCAR ahead of her new release DJ SASSCAR.
Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music?
«I’m born and raised in Stockholm, Sweden with roots from Morocco. Since 2015, I’ve been living in Berlin. I’ve always been a big music enthusiast, when I was a kid I was sat in front of MTV every day. When I turned 18 I got introduced to the Stockholm underground scene which made me fall in love with house music. I took a short music production course 2017 which introduced me a bit to producing, I stopped it however and returned to that one track I produced back then (which I hated) and that became my first single «DON’T EVEN KNOW YOU», I’ve never looked back since!»
Who have been your main inspirations (both musical and in «life»)? And how have they affected your sound?
«Since I listen to a lot of different genres and my taste is constantly changing, I don’t have one particular inspiration per say. I would say the genres that inspire me the most is old school hip hop, 70’s disco and rock and classic house music. In life I’d say my biggest inspiration is my late father. He had the best taste in music (I still have his vinyls with me) and the fact that he travelled the world when he came from the desert in Morocco is inspiring me to believe that nothing is impossible.»
How would you define your sound?
«Right now its a mixture of house and euro dance with a hint of italodisco.»
How has your sound evolved so far? Do you see yourself as part of one style of music?
I definitely do not see myself sticking to one style of music. My next EP will hopefully sound a bit different but with the same sassiness and humour. My taste in music evolve all the time, I also see myself doing very different music when I get older.»
What can you tell us about your last release? What inspired you? What do you want to convey?
«My last release came out of a bad case of depression. I was inspired by stupid dating situations that happened to me during the past years in Berlin and the silliness of euro dance. Working on this EP was a refuge from my depression and made me feel a sense of purpose. I’ve always loved music and humour and to be able to combine it was a huge thing for me. I love it when DJ’s play silly euro dance tracks from the late 90s, early 00s and I wanted to bring something along those lines but in a more modern take to the crowds. I just want to make people laugh and dance, simultaneously!»
What modern artists are you enjoying? Maybe you can share some lesser known artists we might not know of?
«I really love the works of Sharda at the moment, I think he’s absolutely insane in the best way possible!»
What projects are you working on right now?
«Right now I’m taking a little bit of a break, but I will be traveling this fall and work on my next EP while I’m away, hopefully the new experiences and warmer climates will inspire me and contribute a lot to my ideas I already have!»
