INTERVIEW: Emy Perez & DFRNS presents ‘Zoom Zoom’

Venezuelan musical mastermind Emy Perez is globally renowned for her work behind the scenes on some of the most iconic songs of the past decade. Embarking on her solo career in 2021, Emy has teamed up with Dutch producer Hidde Huijsman, who goes under the name DFRNS, for an explosive collaboration, ‘Zoom Zoom’ – out now via BB Music Group.

We have had the pleasure of interviewing this magical duo. Enjoy!

Hola Emy! Great to chat to you today. Where are we speaking to you from?

Hola! Thank you, likewise! I’m currently in Leiden, The Netherlands.

Your new single ‘Zoom Zoom’ is coming up soon. Can you tell us a little bit about the background of this record and how did you come to work with DFRNS?

‘Zoom Zoom’ is an ode to the Goddesses who do not break after a bad relationship, but instead they rise to the occasion triumphantly and get what’s theirs (and then some)!

I wrote it a year before meeting DFRNS and didn’t know exactly where to place it… until I heard the first version of the track, and his production was so next level that I was immediately sold! Matter of fact, we’re going to release a lot of new songs together now!

You have worked with an amazing list of producers and artists around the world. Can you give us some insight into what a studio session is like for you? Any rituals to get you in the zone?

No specific rituals, however, I’m an energy bomb filled with ideas, so the very first thing I’ll do is record myself doing freestyle after freestyle until the winner comes.

I’m super graphic and picky when it comes to lyrics, so I’ll take longer writing than coming up with ideas, as that’s usually in overflow.

You are originally from Venezuela! How does your heritage influence the music you create?

I started singing folkloric music when I was 7! There’s nothing that I do where you won’t hear a little “Joropo”, “Salsa”, “Tambores” or “Flamenco” mixed in.

My country’s rich heritage has gifted me with the biggest music database ever!

You only recently started releasing music of your own, with your debut release coming out earlier this year. How did that feel?

Amazing, exciting and terrifying! I’ve not been an artist for so long! Ask me again in a year ?

You work with and release a wide variety of music. What music do you listen to in your down time at home?

I try to detox when I’m at home, but my boyfriend listens to hip-hop and R&B, so I guess I’d have to say TY Dolla $ign, MIgos, Drake and my fav Post Malone.

Greatest song ever made?

I love good music so I don’t have one tune I think to be the greatest, that changes all the time. Last couple of years it was Sunflower by Posty, this year Higher Power by Coldplay.

If you could put on your own all day long event… where would it be in the world, what venue/location, who would be on the lineup!?

Ha! The Emy event would happen in The Maldives in one of those amazing bungalow hotels. Everybody would be able to watch from the ocean or their own bungalow. It’d have a floating stage with the most amazing PA known to man, and the lineup would be (going for alive) Drake, Post Malone, Beyoncé, Stevie Wonder, Coldplay, Incubus, Jamiroquai, Deftones, Ozuna, Rosalia, and Bad Bunny.

What do you have coming up over the next few months?

More and more releases! We ain’t stopping here, this is just a taste!
