Identity Crisis welcomes DV8 to the label for their debut release. The EP is made up of 3 deep and exploratory tracks. We have had the pleasure of speaking with Identity Crisis and this has been the result.

Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music? Was it all internet based?

I’m 24 from Nottingham, England. My love for music was created on the dancefloor in my younger years. Attending parties in Amsterdam, Ibiza and Berlin only spurred on my inspiration to create music for the ravers. Throughout my times at university I was throwing parties, running record labels and DJing so it’s been a natural progression to where I’m at right now.

Who have been your main inspirations (both musical and in «life»)? And how have they affected your sound?

I’ve always taken inspiration from Raresh & Ricardo Villalobos – mostly when they play b2b.
Each time I see them perform I come away from it with a new found appreciation for music and it seems to rekindle the love of the music for me. Their style of DJing is something unique and I like to take inspiration from their style.

My love for music is from my dad, he is obsessed with 80s music and it exposed me to electronic / synthy music from a young age. Before he used to play depeche mode in the car, now I’m hearing it in edits from my favourite DJs.

How would you define your sound?

It’s centred around minimal techno drums, with multiple layers of pads, atmospheres and glitches. I really enjoy making the track deep and dark while still trying to maintain driven elements throughout.

How has your sound evolved so far?

When I was younger I enjoyed tech house and deep tech much more. Over time I’ve matured to enjoy more of the minimal sound of music. It’s always been deeper / darker music I’m into however.

What can you tell us about your last job? What inspired you? What do you want to convey?

I always try and put forward music that I enjoy making. Sometimes it’s not what everyone wants to hear, but at least people can listen to something and notice distinct characteristics of my ‘sound’. There’s so much music out there now I think it’s important to try and create something a little less ‘normal’.

What can you tell us about each song that makes up your latest work? What is hidden behind?

All three tracks are explorative and evolving throughout. Nimbus2000 is a playful fast paced track that’s built for them peak time dance floor moments. 3D is built for transitioning from the
warm set. Kambo has the playful organ bass but also the deeper darker sounds, they fuse together to create a mysterious club track.

How are you living the current situation because of COVID? Has your work affected you a lot? Do you think there is hope?

In the U.K. the first few weeks of reopening the clubs had so much energy and was packed. We saw a decline over the months and in some places it just has not started to pick up again. As a promoter we experienced some busy parties and some that cost us a lot of money in losses. It’s all a learning curve however, the underground scene will always find a way to continue and evolve.

What projects are you working on right now?

I’m currently working on Identity Crisis 002 and also a 3 track EP for a goal label of mine.
