INTERVIEW: Sagans presents Coherence

This bio of Sagans has been generated by OpenAI GPT-3 and Codex:

The group known as the Sagans is made up of music artists, graphic designers, and AI researchers who create music and visual effects with the help of AI.

The group was formed in 2022 and consists of members from all over the world. The AI Collective is dedicated to creating new and innovative ways to create music and visual effects, and believes that artificial intelligence is the key to unlocking new creative possibilities, something that is truly unique and expressive.

We have had the pleasure of interviewing them and this has been the result.

Can you tell us a bit about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music? Does your training come from the Internet?
All my music training comes from the Internet – spending a lot of time on forums, only learning the bases of chords a long time ago. I have what we call a “hacker” mentality, I’m not learning anything specific, I’m only trying all possible solutions to achieve a specific objective. I’m not watching tutorials, I’m always trying and finding help on an online forum to overcome an obstacle. In programming, you get an error at every single step and this mentality has helped me both for the AI research and music composition.

Who have been your main inspirations (both musically and in «life»)? And how have they affected your sound?
One of my biggest inspirations is Lorn. He can do something so dark and at the same time so powerful, it makes me sad but it gives me a lot of hope at the same time, this is a unique feeling. Aside from that, I guess there is Caribou, CRi, Photay, Darkside, Thom Yorke, Rival Consoles, …
How would you define your sound? And how has your sound evolved so far?
I’m making electronic music with synthesizers and AI. I guess my sound is mainly electronica because of this, but I’m trying to keep a coherent structure, something easy to follow for the listener. I used to compose some electronic tracks with a more distinct “pop” structure back in the days, I guess growing up gave me the confidence to try and do exactly what I have in mind without the fear of always belonging to something.
What can you tell us about your last job? What inspired you? What do you want to transmit?
What can you tell us about each track that makes up your latest work? What concept do you want to convey?
Coherence is a very special track. It’s about the lack of coherence in the big cities, the eternal search for a meaning. The song has been composed at the same time as the music video, all the process being in collaboration with AI algorithms. The result is kind of unique and this is the first step of a deep experimentation journey.
How are you living the current situation due to COVID? Has it affected your work a lot? Do you think there is hope? Do you feel that the underground scene will continue to persist?
Covid has forced us to think about music creation in another way. I used to start music projects with the motivation of playing it live. With the current situation, I’m definitely taking the time to experiment and to propose something that does not necessarily need to go live one day, it can fully exist on its own. With Sagans, we are working on a fully digital approach, something that can exist virtually and still resonate with the audience.
What projects are you working on right now?
We are already working on the next tracks and the associated videos. We really want to work on something never done before – involving a lot of AI research and a lot of experimentation. On the side we are also working with other music artists on their music videos. We don’t want to be a music project only, we want to create anything for anyone as long as there is a real meaning behind the work.
