For todays artist interview, we sit down with Voice Of Baceprot. Ahead of their new release in which their single School Revolution was remixed by some of the top names in the Techno scene including Timo Maas. Lets have a chat…

Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from? For those that don’t know?

We come from a small village near Garut in the province of West Java, Indonesia. We started playing music in 2014 when we were in second grade of junior high school, around 14-15 years old. During our time at school, we were quite the outcasts, lacking in self-confidence. But when we discovered music for the first time, it felt like we finally found our true identity; the beginning of a new life.

Who have been your main inspirations (both musical and in «life»)? And how have they affected your sound?

Our musical inspirations are Rage Against The Machine and System of a Down. We believe that they are the bands who have managed to break musical boundaries. In terms of life, it would be Abah Erza, who was our counsellor at school and is still part of the band even to this day. He is the figure who we look up to; someone who has taught us many things in life.

How would you define your sound?

It is the sound of a movement. The sound of our concerns that gave birth to songs of defiance. Our sound is also the sound of honesty about what we feel each day. We pour all of that into our music through the explosive pounding of Sitti’s double pedal, the roar of my guitar, and Widi’s slapping bass.

How has it been being remixed by some great people like Timo Maas and others?

We initially asked several DJs to remix “School Revolution” to celebrate our debut single’s fourth anniversary, including Timo Maas. To our surprise, they were so excited about the project, which is an honour for us as we were able to work together with these great musicians.

This is quite a different sound to your original – how come you chose this route with the remixes?

Music is dynamic and knows no boundaries. We play music based on freedom, so we must also accept interpretations of our songs in various different versions.

How has your sound evolved so far? Do you see yourself as part of one style of music?

Ever since we moved to Jakarta (the capital city of Indonesia, ed.), we have had the pleasure of meeting many other musicians, including established ones, and we are so fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from them. We have started to explore our sound and music even more and one of the results from our exploration is the remix EP of “School Revolution”.

What modern artists are you enjoying? Maybe you can share some lesser known artists we might not know of?

We like Gojira, Jinjer, as well as Lamb of God and Slipknot. We have not been listening to a lot of new music lately because we are currently in the midst of making our own songs. However, we are revelling in the rise of female bands in Indonesia. And on that note, at the time of writing, we are set to witness the return of the very first Indonesian female band Dara Puspita, who will play at the same festival as us on October 8, 2022 in Jakarta.

What projects are you working on right now?

At the moment, we are pretty occupied with working on a few new songs at the studio for the album that we want to make while also preparing for our upcoming gigs.
