Canadian Dad Of The Year releases his 4-track release. Dad Of The Year that kind of artists who do not stitch without thread, who know what they are doing at all times and leave nothing to chance, although sometimes their decisions may seem unusual or out of place.
Unearthly can and should be heard as a piece of timeless music, which conveys a positive idea in times of conflict, and its aesthetic appeals to the most basic, deep and receptive of the spirit. Dad Of The Year, in short, designs a wide and fragile sound to listen and feel from the deepest.
We have had the pleasure of interviewing him and this has been the result.
Could You tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / How did you get in the music industry? Your formation comes from internet?
Thank you Como Las Grecas, nice to talk with you! I’m originally from MontreaI Canada, but I live in Costa Rica today. I started at the end of the 90s and have been Djing for more tan 20 years. I even had the time to retired in 2012, and then come back under Dad of the Year! So it’s been a while ha ha.
Which ones have been your main inspirations (Musical or in your life)? And how have them affected your sound?
I have been through many many cycles of electronic music throughout the years. I have seen genres come and go. I played almost everything, from relentless techno, progressive, dark tribal, dub techno, minimal, deep house… from the darkest clubs to daytime events, from 140 bpm to 100 bpm ha ha. So the inspiration comes from all lot of styles, but mostly from great DJs like Digweed, Tenaglia, Lawler, Cattaneo… that can shape a whole night of consistent storytelling no matter what genre they play. It’s about finding his emotional signature.
How would you define your sound? And how has it evolve till now?
I cover both spectrum of dark and light. It essential to tell the whole story. So that would be from very dark and trippy to bright and melodic. It is without a doubt, tinted of melancholy and hope… like a longing for God.
In recent years and as I grow older, I found great joy in playing and producing downtempo, so I would say that it evolved by having a major sudden drop in BPM! But I want to keep that edge, so it stays both a listening experience AND club material.
What can you tell us about your last work? Where did you get the inspiration from? What do you want to transmit?
When I was doing my “Uneartly” EP I was listening to Holy Other, I think you can hear the influence very well in “A Hole in my Heart”. I just love how I can feel so much emotions with just abstract pieces of ghostly voices. What I love about electronic music is that it doesn’t tell you what to feel with lyrics, everybody writes their own story while listening to it. But everybody understand the frequency of where it comes from. I think that EP, is my soul’s blue print. If you want to know me, listen to these 4 tracks, and you will get exactly who I am.
What can you tell us about every track of your new project? Which concept do you want to transmit?
I love the track selection of this EP because it pretty much covers my idea of storytelling. It needs to hurt, it needs to provoke, it needs to bring you down the rabbit hole, but then… I will always with that that sense of bliss… at the end, everything will be fine.
How are you living the actual situation with the COVID? How has it affected your work? Do you think there is hope? Do you feel that underground scene Will go on?
I have been very lucky, COVID for me has been a motor to leave the city and come live in the jungle. I’m building my house, will have my own independent studio, life here is amazing. I have slowed down DJing tremendously after 2012, so it’s not like my DJing activity suddenly stopped. Now with my new Dad of the Year alias, I’m ready to start again. But It’s not like COVID held me back, if anything, it helped me shape what is happening right now.
In which other projects are you working in this moment?
I have another track titled “Lord of the Flies” coming out on EXPmental’s various artists compilation on October 28th 2022. Very, very heavy downtempo track. Otherwise, I’m preparing what will come out beginning 2023!
