Next up in our series of quick fire QA, Erik Lucas from Deep State Records joins the Como Las Grecas team for a few moments to talk about himself, his music and his life.
1. Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from
/ how did you get into music?
I’m from the suburbs of Chicago, but I’ve lived and traveled in different places throughout the country and the world. At the moment I’m living in south Florida near Miami. I ‘got into’ music at an early age. In fact, my first memory I can recall is listening to music with my father. Ever since then I’ve been
addicted to music. Other than that though, before I started to learn music production I was not into making music at all, so you can say I don’t have a background in music, but I’ve been a huge fan my entire
life.
2. Who have been your main inspirations (both musical and in «life»)?
And how have they affected your sound?
I’ll start with my music inspirations first. My primary inspiration is Pryda aka Eric Prydz. His work has been incredibly inspirational, and to say that he hasn’t affected my sound would be a tremendous lie. I
think his music exists in a realm that others can work in, so to speak; the combination of both good production and good progression. Another huge inspiration is the band U2. I mentioned previously that
my earliest memory is with my father listening to music, and that music was U2. Throughout my entire childhood I was listening to U2; I even dressed up as Bono for Halloween once! U2 is in my DNA. There is
no question.
3. How would you define your sound?
I think I’d define it as meaningful, but that’s just my opinion. I’m not so sure how others would define it. I’m sure, if asked, others would say my work sounds clean and well produced.
4. How has your sound evolved so far? Do you see yourself as part of
one style of music?
I think I’ve consistently been getting better and better. I’m always trying to learn and push my own boundaries. I work only in electronic music, so in that sense I only have one style, but I draw and utilize concepts from other electronic genres such as trance, techno, house, and breakbeat. Hell, even disco.
5. What can you tell us about your last release? What inspired you?
What do you want to convey?
I think my last release is some of my best work yet. It’s hard to say what I want to convey; I just want others to connect with it.
6. What modern artists are you enjoying? Maybe you can share some
lesser known artists we might not know of?
I’m really enjoying Grum’s latest album lately. It’s so good. As far as lesser known artists: check out all the guys on Deep State. There are some criminally underrated artists releasing on that label, and I think many of them have a huge future in the music industry. Keep your eyes peeled!
7. What projects are you working on right now?
I can’t say much other than that I’m working on an album. 😉
