Jake Beautyman creates music that works in all settings and transcends genres. His openness to a wide range of sound is what has both made him a widely loved favourite, but also someone who operates in his own parallel musical world. We had a chance to talk to him, so enjoy your reading and check out his latest releases.
Q. Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music? Was it all internet based?
A. I’m from Ipswich, Suffolk, in the UK & I got into music from a young age after being surrounded by it via my family. Alot of early 90’s UK Tech House, late 80’s US house + 60’s – 70’s rock.
Q. Who have been your main inspirations (both musical and in «life»)? And how have they affected your sound?
A. I’ve got alot of different characters who inspire me musically; Jay Tripwire, Terry Francis, Dutchie (of Delicate Droids), Jimmy Page, Pink Floyd, Flatbush Zombies. (You can see that not all are electronic musicians) and I believe they have played their own part, wether big or small, in aiding me to shape my own sound.
Q. How would you define your sound?
A. This is always a hard one hahaha… I sometimes say Trippy, Dark, Energetic, Ominous… really it’s elements of Acid, Techno, Tech House & Deep House all merged / combined together to form one.
Q. How has your sound evolved so far?
A. I began producing Hip-Hop mainly when I first started out at 14 years old, so my sound has changed quite drastically in terms of rythm/structure, I was always told my beats sounded «Techy» and electronic though.
Q. What can you tell us about your last job? What inspired you? What do you want to convey?
A. I’m working on a few Vinyl releases this year with some real cool producers involved. They’re taking shape nicely.The last project I was asked to do was a remix and I got creative with it. Mashing up breakbeat, acid house & deep house.
Q. What can you tell us about each song that makes up your latest work? What is hidden behind?
A. The most recent release is «Slime Time» (out on Superfreq Records) and is definitley a favourite of mine.
Mr.C + David Scuba’s record label has always been at the very top for me and I’ve been DJ’ing Superfreq tracks ever since I picked up the decks a few years ago.
Track one – ‘Slime Time’ is a filthy energetic peak-time tool! Spot on for making a crowd come up in a set. It’s got a wicked remix from David Scuba as well to accompany it.
It’s brother on the other side of the record is – ‘The Golden Tree’ – described by Mr.C as «Deeply groovy with a solid bassline & haunting pads, it’s the 303s & tripped out synths that shine on this undeniably infectious Acid Masterpiece».
Q. How are you living the current situation because of COVID? Has your work affected you a lot? Do you think there is hope? I feel like the underground scene will continue to persist.
A. Oh totally, the underground scene can’t die (at least in my opinion anyways)
It has been a struggle as venues had to close here in the UK but it did allow plenty more studio time which is always a great thing!
Q. What projects are you working on right now?
A. Right now I’m working on a Vinyl release for the DJ Agency I just signed to. The agency is a new venture but the label has been going strong for 10 years now. Suena Hermosa records.
The main track is featuring Odette of VDK and was created one night sending stems online (as she is from the Netherlands)
It has a remix coming from a wicked artist too that I can’t wait for people to hear.
