Melchior Sultana creates music that works in all settings and transcends genres. His openness to a wide range of sounds is what has made him a beloved producer, but also someone who operates in his own parallel musical world. Sultana’s unrivaled signature style continues to expand with each release.
Now, ahead of the release of the ‘Self Reflection’ LP, Oath are pleased to present the first single from Melchior Sultana’s new album, ‘Dogma’, which in many ways offers a delightful preview of what to expect from his latest LP.
We have had the pleasure of interviewing the producer, and this has been the result.
Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music?
Born and raised on the island of Malta in the middle of the Mediterranean, As one would not expect Malta always had a thing going on when it comes to underground music, So that mystery and sound of something you would only hear if you went to an event or you where friends with a certain DJ that would give you a cd, As an 11 year old kid that was fascinating and fresh, But one particular DJ really hit the spot when it comes to the vision i had and heard in my head and that was Owen jay, I started following Owen and have his mixes playing at home and would think yes this is the music, Rhodes and 909s, Wow! Before i approached Owen i was involved in a techno project and label where we released 5 records, This is all happening while i was still in school, So i think about it now and say that was quit an achievement, In the early 2000’s, From Malta and being still 15 years releasing vinyl on my own label while still at school, Sounds cool.
Who have been your main inspirations (both musical and in «life»)? And how have they affected your sound?
Musically i would say any artist that makes music that is coming from a soul, that is honest, no trends or trying to get on the next big thing, that’s too much stress and fake, As i mentioned i still respect Owen Jay after all these years of so many names that came and now gone He is still here doing it, Same love and passion, The Truth! Also i am inspired by people who over come struggles, Who put the responsibility on them selfs and say it’s up to me to get better, Music is a life long education, You are never good or done, You can always be better and the mentality is everything, Never think about how or why that other artist is making this or getting that, Just focus on you and invest.
How would you define your sound?
I call it fusion but it’s too generic to say that, It’s house music done with soul no doubt, Always on the strive to be better and fresh, Open to knowledge and influences while still being it’s own individual sound
How has your sound evolved so far?
As mentioned earlier, It’s a strive for progress and education, On every project i’m working on i’m always feeling this force or pushing and being better then before.
What can you tell us about your last job? What inspired you? What do you want to convey?
This album is a reflection of self indeed, Capturing a certain vibe but being different, I went from chilled to electro to a more club sound, A collection of tastes and vibes i’v been keeping hidden but now it will start to come out slowly
What can you tell us about each song that makes up your latest work? What is hidden behind?
It’s being me and following what i feel and going my own path without any care of what is hot or what’s going on in the world, Music as an Art
How are you living the current situation because of COVID? Has your work affected you a lot? Do you think there is hope? I feel like the underground scene will continue to persist.
This situation only pushed creative people to be more creative and find new ways to evolve, Of course it effected the scene as far as gigs and events but at the same time it was an invitation to stop and think of the purpose, why are we doing this? Am i being honest with it? Is it given me true satisfaction and priceless feeling? The artist will always persist as this is a force within that is from nature and therefore nothing can stop it
What projects are you working on right now?
Working on a new ep that will be out on my own label Profound Sound Records and doing gigs, Also i am very focused on this album and waiting to see it manifested in stores worldwide to then see the reaction of those who will hopefully appreciate the work, Thank you!
