Sydney-based electronic artist Nyxen releases her new single ‘Silence In Motion’ out now via BMG/Tank Top Records. The single serves as the second track off Nyxen’s forthcoming debut album, PNXK (punk), set to be released Friday, July 1 and available now for pre-order here.
A futuristic take on 80s synth-pop, ‘Silence In Motion’ is driven by hazy reverberated vocals, thumping basslines, and organic percussion. Through a mesmerizing blend of new wave and glam rock, the second single off Nyxen’s upcoming album synthesizes Nyxen’s unique sound and further establishes her as an artist to watch this year. ‘Silence In Motion’ arrives on the heels of the project’s titular track ‘PXNK’ (punk).
Nyxen describes the track as “a fast paced journey into what it feels like to be an outsider. An introverted, over-thinker, idolizing the freedom and confidence they see in the people around them, wanting that for themselves.” Nyxen added, “‘Silence In Motion’ felt fitting as a name, the silence of erratic thoughts speeding through your mind, the silent movement of people you cross paths with and the effects of unspoken words as you move through time.»
Known for her intricate synth work and guitar-driven production, Nyxen has carved a unique space for herself at the intersection of dance, indie, and pop music. First emerging on the scene in 2015, Nyxen has used her revolutionary sound to amass millions of streams and garner a dedicated following. As one of Australia’s most revered multi-instrumentalists, Nyxen has had multiple songs added to Triple J rotation of early releases ‘Running’ and ‘In The City,’ and recent additions ‘Insomnia’ and ‘Red P Plates.’ A force within Australia’s music scene, Nyxen has sold out her own headline shows and supported the likes of Golden Features and Crooked Colours.
Exploring ‘80s influences and instrumentation for the creative direction of her anticipated debut album PXNK (punk), Nyxen continues to forge a unique, refined sound. “The direction of the album all started with ‘PXNK’, I had a name, a sound, and a vision for the body of work I wanted to put forward and it feels very fitting to guide the listener into the album the way I was guided into writing it,” Nyxen says about the album. Weaving deep, emotive electronic foundations with indie sensibilities and universally relatable lyrics, her music leaves its mark on her listeners with each and every release.
Nyxen invites you along for an emotional ride on ‘Silence In Motion,’ available on all streaming platforms on Friday, May 13th, with US tour dates coming in 2022.
Can you tell us a little about your experience? Where are you from / how did you get into music? Was it all internet based?
I grew up in Sydney, Australia. I was always so curious of music, I remember most Saturday nights when I was young, my parents would get us in the car to do a loop of the city driving over the Anzac Bridge and Harbour Bridge, up the highway, listening to this radio show called the “Saturday Night Party Mix”, which played 90’s Eurodance and 80’s music. I think that’s where my love of those styles of music was formed, I’d stare at the city lights listening to these really electric songs.
I played a few instruments as a child, moving toward writing my own songs as I got older. After finishing school I asked my Dad to gift me ableton for my 18th birthday, fell down the rabbit hole and have yet to re-emerge.
Who have been your main inspirations (both musical and in «life»)? And how have they affected your sound?
I’d say my current main inspiration for music is the Cyberpunk film genre, I love the aesthetic and I definitely write with those themes, sounds at the forefront of my mind.
As far as life goes, I think I’m probably riding the tide of influence that surrounds me everyday, unaware of its effect.
How would you define your sound?
Moody, electric, nostalgic, synth and guitar driven.
How has your sound evolved so far?
It’s evolved a lot, my earlier music was very different to what I’m currently making. It used to be very happy and carefree and now I think it’s a bit more moody and neon.
What can you tell us about each song that makes up your latest work? What is hidden behind?
I’ve released four songs from my album so far, Nightmare, Tunnels, Pxnk and the most recent Silence In Motion.
Nightmare, I was having a writing block before I wrote this song. I’d just been dating someone, it didn’t work out and those lyrics are very reflective of what was happening at that time.
I wrote Tunnels at the start of a new relationship, the ups and downs, the trust and anxiety. That time when you’re still getting to know eachother on a new level. Tunnels is me putting my cards on the table for this person.
PXNK, is my cyberpunk dream. My attempt at packing the themes and tones from the movie genre, into a four minute song.
Silence In Motion is a fast paced journey into what it feels like to be an outsider. An introverted, overthinker, idolising the freedom of confidence they see in the characters/ people around them, wanting that for themselves.
How are you living the current situation because of COVID? Has your work affected you a lot? Do you think there is hope? I feel like the underground scene will continue to persist.
COVID was really tough, it definitely made me lose a sense of purpose but it’s looking much more positive, I find that I appreciate things a lot more now.
In Sydney I’m seeing a lot of warehouse/hidden raves and events popping up which is really cool and a return to where dance music originated. The underground scene by nature will always find a way to persist and it’s times like these that create the culture around underground music. I’m excited to see where it leads.
What projects are you working on right now?
I’m just about to release my first album PXNK (punk) on the 1st July, so I’m touring a bit in the lead up to that and have plans for even more touring once it’s out. It’s a great feeling to wrap up the album, I’ve been able to redirect my attention to writing new music and what comes next. No doubt lots of long days and nights in my studio ahead of me.
