INTERVIEW: FLVN

We caught up with French artist FLVN to discuss his latest release and more.
Hi Flavien, thanks for joining us at Como Las Grecas. How would you describe your music to someone who doesn’t know you?
I started 10 years ago, making music between techno& dark disco, inspired by kraut rock or EBM. I also evolved with post punk bands like Order89 and Blaues Einhorn which gives the colour of the FLVN sound today
You have a new release coming on the bORDEL imprint, how did you get involved with the label?
I knew the founders Sebastien and Maud a few years ago and I had had positive feedback on their previous achievements. One day, while producing this EP, I asked Sebastien to listen to it and it was he who suggested that I release it on their label. I let you imagine my reaction when I joined this beautiful family!
What can you tell us about the title, ‘Sensaciones Platonicas’?
It is a title that has evolved enormously. I think there were 3 versions before this one. But it mostly started from a conversation with Abby Knives and my desire to work with other people to further develop FLVN.
The record features 2 collaborations with Blaues Einhorn and Abby Knives? How did these come about and what was the writing & recording process like?
I wanted to start merging my music with lyrics by other artists and it was very natural to mix that up. I came up with musical ideas and they came up with the vocals.
What have been some of the strongest influences on your music would you say? Favourite bands, albums etc
I don’t have a top artist or album, it’s mainly the different musical trends that I’ve discovered all my life that have influenced me. But I listened a lot to Vox Low, Curses, David Shaw and The Beat or She past Away, The Psychedelic Furs or even French police to name a few.
Away from the studio what are you personal interests and passions?
I really like horror movies even if I find that today’s ones are rarely good haha. Otherwise, since I was little, I play the video games.
Do you take your music on the road as a live show, or perform as a DJ? What have been some of your club or festival highlights?
When the FLVN project was born, I was very much in demand as a DJ. I was able to play in England (Alfresco, Newcastle) in Spain, Italy, Romania with the Gouter De Nuit collective created by the excellent Baka Backa with whom I travelled around Paris at the same time.
I took a break to devote myself to the creation of the Order89 group and discover the world of live shows. I can now say it, FLVN will have its Live Show in the months to come!
What else do you have coming up for 2023?
I have this EP which launches the return of my Techno project. I have several projects on the way for FLVN, but I’m very happy to leave it with bORDEL because I don’t release much new stuff, I always want it to be done with good people like Sebastien and Maud. It’s a great opportunity to share with people I admire.
There will also be the release of our 3rd album with Order89 which is coming at the end of the year. We will say that I used 2023 to get my inspiration back on the road hoping to offer you other music!
